Frequently Asked Questions

Do you allow night fishing? We do not allow fishing to continue after dusk. Electricity is not supplied to the perimeter of the lake, and the darkness can create a hazard due to the terrain and topography. This might change in the future for certain functions and events.
Can I come fish whenever I want? Unfortunately, no. For the safety of the other guests and the property, we must have a staff member present at all events. If anyone is caught fishing, hiking, exploring, etc. without clearance, you will be asked to leave and if you do not cooperate we will give you stern looks and possibly question your upbringing. We reserve the right to prosecute trespassers to the full extent of the law. Lake Ramona is closed to the public everyday except the days advertised on this web-site or on Face Book events posted by Lake Ramona.
Do you allow pets? We love our furry friends! Although Fido is welcome, we must enforce all leash laws not only for the safety of your pet but for other guests. We highly recommend a secure anchor tie-out for your pet; please do not attach them to the trees on the property, and do not leave them unattended. Fresh water is available for your pet, and is recommended over lake water, just ask for a bowl or bring your own. PLEASE NOTE: We are blessed with lots of natural wildlife such as turkey, doves, geese, ducks, turtles, and deer. Any pet that provokes or attempts to attack wildlife or other dogs will not be allowed on the property, and the responsible owners will not be allowed to leave them unattended elsewhere.
What can we bring with us? For general events, the following are allowed and welcome: Coolers, radios, fishing poles and equipment, chairs, picnic baskets/blankets. Boats with trolling motors are welcome with advance notice and only for specified events. Gasoline motors can be left on boats but not used. Please call to verify that the lake water level is sufficient, and that a specific event is a boat-approved event. We will be happy to direct you to our boat launch area. Although the lake is so picturesque you might feel tempted to move in, we naturally must set some guidelines. NO overnight camping or campfires are allowed on the property at any time. This type of activity is limited only to the owner's of the property. Our desire is to provide an alcohol and drug free oriented place where a family can enjoy a day on a lake. Therefore, our policy is NO ALCOHOL or DRUGS ARE ALLOWED ON THE PROPERTY AND ANYONE FOUND CONSUMING OR USING WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE AND WILL NOT BE ISSUED A REFUND OF THEIR ADMISSION FEE.
What can we not bring with us? FIREARMS, FIREWORKS, GLASS CONTAINERS, ALCOHOL, DRUGS and BAD ATTITUDES.
Do I need a Georgia Fishing Permit/License? No. Since we are a private, family owned property, fishing license are not required.
Where does my admission fee go? We, as a family, are trying to preserve and promote the property so that others can enjoy it. All funds are used for operating cost and to improve or maintain the property. Our staff is on a volunteer basis only.
What kinds of bait can I use? We welcome all baits and lures, except for when excluded for a specified event. Please feel free to ask if your bait is welcomed. Worms, crickets and chicken livers are all acceptable and will find success in catching some nice fish. We also have had great success with man-made lures.
Do we sell bait? No, we do not sell bait. You have to provide your own bait and tackle. See Menu for Live Bait for suggestions.
What kind of fish are in the lake? Catfish, Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. LOTS OF THEM. Some are big, some are small. Please note at check-in any size requirements for the fish you keep. These can vary by event and season.
Are there alligators in the lake? Not that we have seen! However, there are snapping turtles, and beavers, so please do not enter the water unless it is an emergency. No swimming, please!
How deep is the lake? The depths vary, but range from 4' to 20'. The deepest parts are behind the island; this is where the river runs that feeds the lake. Again, no swimming or wading. The lake bottom can be difficult to see in places, and not wise to walk on as there may be loose rocks in places where the current changes.
What do I need to wear? Fly-fishing vests and festooned hats are optional, but if you are feeling festive, go for it. We always recommend sunscreen, hats and always wear shoes (beach shoes or water shoes are best, or sneakers), and appropriate clothing. If you wouldn't wear it in front of your grandmother, then please rethink your attire when visiting.
I've never been fishing! Help! What do I do? Ask when you arrive. We will be happy to help you figure out what to do.
What's so great about fishing? It's fun for all ages, relaxing, and low-key. It also can be fairly inexpensive. Pack a cooler, bring some fishing poles, and wait for the action! The average cost for a family of 4 to go to an amusement park with food and parking can be over $150. A family of 4 can fish for around $30 all day, and you can control how much junk food is eaten. It also can be the start of some great memories, or bring back old ones, and children can learn an appreciation for nature at a young age. Also, it's soothing to sit back and listen to the water, birds, frogs, and other wonderful creatures that call Lake Ramona home.
OH MY! I CAUGHT A FISH! WHAT DO I DO? First thing, you do the "I Caught A Fish!" dance. Then, if your fish falls within our size allowance, you are welcome to keep it. No, we don't clean them for you. We do encourage catch-and-release as well (it doesn't hurt the fish). If you want to capture your child's first fish on camera, but are wary of bringing your nice camera to the lake, just bring a bucket or borrow one of ours for some lake water. Try to keep the fish just long enough in some water for us to photograph the proud moment for you. We would be happy to email you the picture of the Big One that didn't get away.
Where can I answer the call of nature? We have two restrooms accessible from the outside of the Lake Ramona office building. If unsure where they are located, just ask one of the volunteers. Please refrain from answering "the call" near or in the lake, out of a courtesy for others.
